Marc - "Coaching and friendships I am building will keep me in the game"

What brought you to the gym?
I’m 54 and want to stay healthy so I can keep active in both by personal and business lives. I am eagerly awaiting the birth of my first grand child and also launching two new businesses that will hopefully make a significant impact by creating both manufacturing and high tech jobs for Northern Ontario residents. I have Type II diabetes and want to manage this condition through exercise and healthy eating habits. I really need help in achieving my fitness/health objectives and believe that the coaching and friendships I am building at the gym will keep me in the game.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
The first time I peeked into the gym (after an adjustment of my subluxations with Dr. Doni) and saw the kettle bells being flung around, I thought, “that looks bizarre!” But what I also noticed was the dedication and effort that was being put into the swings by the athletes. I wanted to work my core (aka, the keg) and was told that kettle bells really helped with this. I’ve been at the gym for 4 months and still working on perfecting my technique for each type of exercise. Kettle bells offers a full body workout and I really enjoy how I feel after each and every session.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
Everyone is very friendly and we all work at our own level of conditioning. I’m impressed with everyone’s dedication. My male ego sometimes take a shit kicking as the fitness level of some of the ladies is out of this world… I just can’t keep up with them, outstanding! Both Katie and Caz are great coaches and are very patient, they always provide good feedback on our forms and suggest good tweaks to help keep us safe and healthy.
What are you working toward now?
I’m working on getting my cardio back on track and also working on all parts of my body. I’m still looking for some solid improvements on my core…and it would be good to see the weight go down as well. I still tell myself that I’m converting fat to muscle, which is why I’ve only dropped a few pounds, but that story is going to get old soon..lol. Also looking at crossing the 300lb mark in the deadlifts…almost there!
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story? One word, Eric Delparte, I guess that’s two words. He’s hilarious, doing some dirty dancing in his favorite spot in the gym. I found this too on the facebook site. https://www.facebook.com/sudburykettlebellclub/videos/323646425008274/

Kelly - "Now I don’t look at others and judge myself."
What brought me to the gym?
I still don’t know.. I was searching for something deep within me... I was trying to find my happy!
My first impression
“ok Caz isn’t scary!!! He’s so welcoming! But holy shit look at that guy (Evan) he’s crazy fit I can’t do that!!” Now I don’t look at others and judge myself. Now I just show up and push myself to be better than the last time!!
My favourite part of our workouts together??
The unwavering support from the coaches and class mates!!
What am I working towards now?
Just continuing to be better!!
My best sudbury kettlebell club story......
Gaining roles models that are not IG famous... they are real moms doing real jobs! But in all honesty... lifting 165lbs was pretty kick ass! Or the first time I jumped up to the rig.... or my first box jump!! Or putting on a pair of pants in a size I haven’t fit in in 4 years!!! There are too many to pick just one!!

Sylvie - "I knew right them that I had made a good choice in which I could achieve my goals."

I was pretty impressed by the results when Katie showed me the before and after prictures. And I am very excited about starting up with the classes.
As for my first impression I was happy about the size of the gym and that we were a small group. I knew right them that I had made a good choice in which I could achieve my goals.
I decided to join your club when I saw the ad on Facebook. I had put on weight and I wasn't comfortable in my skin. So I decided why not. I have been to a few other gyms in Sudbury but they were all overcrowded and they didn't focus on the importance of how to do things properly. And another gym I tried was also overcrowded with no privacy or much place to park. It was really cheap but I ended up quitting going over there. Plus I didn't like flipping tires!
I enjoy your club because it is small, clean and I am surrounded by people around my age group. I am fifty one years old so I am definitely not going to be trying to keep up with a twenty year old. Also Katie is a fantastic coach and a great motivator. She explains and demonstrates every exercise we will be doing. And I like the variety of exercises. I also like the fact that Katie knows exactly when to challenge me.
My goal now is to tone up and lose a few more inches so I can be comfortable with myself and feel confident. I know a lot of people say that it's part of getting older putting on weight but I just can't accept that. I hope to have grandchildren one day, not anytime soon, and I would like to be able to keep up with them. My kids would kill me if they knew I said this! lol
And one of my best friends joined the six week challenge because I really promoted your club. So far she is impressed.
So kudos to you and your staff!

Jenny - 'So welcoming and supportive'

What brought you to the gym?

My new goal will be to join the classes twice a week to continue to get fit!
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
Attempting to do the crab walk! Haven't done that since I was young! And wow it use to be so easy!!
Anything else you would like to add/say?

Andrew - "A very welcoming place to train"

What brought you to the gym?
I relocated from Australia in 2017 and was looking for a challenging, fun and dynamic gym similar to my old gym in Perth. After trying a number of group training gyms around Sudbury without much luck, I discovered Sudbury Kettlebell Club in January 2018 and have been there ever since.
What was your first impression?
My first impression was that Sudbury Kettlebell was a very welcoming place to train; it can be daunting working out in a new gym (and in my case, a new country) not knowing anyone or the dynamics of the club. Caz and the team made me feel as I was part of the group straight away and the rest is history.
Has that changed?
Noooop….new members are always made feel welcome
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
The 6am starts with like-minded people….knowing that we all had to dig deep to drag ourselves from a warm bed, sit in a horrifyingly cold car then physical and mentally push ourselves through a workout after only being awake for a short while is inspiring.
What are you working toward now?
Working towards consisting swinging, snatching and cleaning the 24kg green monster
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
Hitting 100 classes was a dandy although probably my favourite aspect of Sudbury Kettlebell Club is the banter between the early morning crew….I never thought Canadians could be so witty at that time of the day! Plus that time we did 100 snatches in 5 minutes….

Helen - "I do see the changes in my strength"

What brought you to the gym? I read a book that indicated that that women need heavy strength training to maintain muscle mass, minimize the aerobic stress on our bodies and limit hormonal fluctuations. I came to the gym to explore whether heaving lifting can help me. In particularly, I wanted to see if it would increase my strength, stop me from falling regularly and improve my performance in triathlon and mountain biking.
What was your first impression? Has that changed? Initially, kettlebells were a little awkward to work with. Now that I’ve become more comfortable holding them, I enjoy working it. I do see the changes in my strength. I hiked The Crack, in the fall, and I felt more stable while climbing and descending the boulders. I’ve also run a few 5K races. I found that I’m able to keep my pace throughout the distance. In the past, I tired during the race and my pace dropped off in the last few km. That hasn’t happened since I started training at the gym.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together? I really like that the workouts take a short amount of time but still builds my strength.
What are you working toward now?
I’m continuing to work at increasing my strength. This summer, I plan to continue participating in running and mountain bike races. I want to feel strong while climbing the hills. Continuing the workout at the gym will help me.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
Coach Caz is an inspiration. I see how strong he is while mountain biking and running. I know that it comes from his own training and nutrition. It inspires me to workout
Maggie - "It's the kick I need to my day"
1. What brought you to the gym?
I was looking for a challenging morning workout 2. What was your first impression? Has that changed? This was going to be tough and it was going to be a challenge. I was impressed by everyone who went to the gym and their dedication to the gym. Many have been members for years. 3. What is your favorite part of our workouts together? The feeling of success once the class is done. The feeling of accomplishing the workout and it's the kick I need to my day. 4. What are you working toward now? Continuing the workouts at least 2-3 times a week and continue to build strength. Overall maintain a healthy lifestyle. 5. What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story? Jill just hit the floor and lied down after too many burpees |
Martha - "You have the encouragement of fellow kettlebellers"

1. What brought you to the gym?
Saw a post on Facebook about a six week challenge. It was starting in June. I figured it was a good way to kick-start my summer. I may have missed my opportunity for a rockin beach-bod this summer but hey why not a fit-Fall body. LOL.
2. What was your first impression? Has that changed?
First day of the challenge was learning to use kettlebells, and I was overwhelmed. They looked so heavy and dangerous. Now I feel way more comfortable using them, and always improving.
3. What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
Favourite part of the workouts are the small classes/groups. You have the encouragement of fellow kettlebellers and you get the feeling of having a personal trainer coaching you through the workout as if it were a one-on-one training session.
4. What are you working toward now?
I'm working toward improving excercise techniques. Before signing up and working with Caz, I never realized how improperly I was working out, which inevitably led to injury. Now I'm relearning all the excercise techniques, improving my strength, and hoping to reach my goal weight and body fitness level properly and safely.
5. What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
Best part of the workouts is the satisfaction you feel after you've completed a 45 min session that you were initially dreading to do. It feels great to have tried, improved and completed it.

Brad - "No matter what the exercises are I usually leave soaked in sweat"

What brought you to the gym?
My wife convinced me to get a membership with her for Kettlebells. We rarely do anything together (other than parenting) and this, even though we aren’t really speaking to each other is a nice event that her and I can do as a couple.
What was your first impression?
First impression was that it was harder than I expected. After lifting heavy in the gym for a few years I thought that a Kettlebell workout would be too easy. I was definitely wrong.
What is your favourite part of our workouts together?
No matter what the exercises are I usually leave soaked in sweat. Always a great feeling knowing you gave it your all.
What are you working toward now?
I would love to be able to do more than 3 pull-ups/chin-ups and have the stamina to not stop for 40 or so minutes.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
Mid August on a Monday or Tuesday there was a workout with 100 goblet squats at the last leg of the workout. My legs were like rubber after completing the exercise. I also suffered the remainder of the week with very sore quads.

Meg - "My favourite part is the encouragement"

What brought you to the gym?
Being a mom of 4 kids I wanted to be a healthier version of myself so that I could keep up with them as they grew! The job of a birth doula can be physically exhausting as well so I wanted to be able to feel stronger and give my clients my very best.
What was your first impression?
My first impression was how much I loved the environment!
Has that changed?
No, I still love the environment and seeing others push themselves to be healthier versions of themselves
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
My favourite part is the encouragement that Caz offers everyone and the satisfying faces on myself and others when they achieve more than they thought they could.
What are you working toward now?
I’m still working towards being a stronger, healthier and confident version of myself and am so happy to be apart of this team!
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
My very first day at SKC was on a Friday the 13th. I don’t remember exactly what was involved but I remember it was intense and I’m pretty sure the words “death” were on the board... It was hilarious to practically be dragging myself out of that class, unsure if I would be able to go back again. I’m so proud of myself for sticking with it, especially being introduced to it that way!

Meredith - "it's now or never. I want to age with stamina and strength"

What brought you to the gym?
I came to the gym in a mini mid-life crisis I suppose. 45 had me feeling like it's now or never. I want to age with stamina and strength. I still want to hike, paddle and ski in another 30 years. I had to start somewhere.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
My first impression was "wow this looks hard" and "these people are super supportive and non threatening". I still think it's hard, but less so than when I first started and I feel excited to try heavier weights and new exercises. I actually miss the workouts when I can't make it. I love the super supportive people, we laugh together, make embarrassing workout noises together and praise each others successes, even thought they are all different.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
My favorite part of our workouts? the feeling of satisfaction I have when I complete a workout I started off thinking I'd never be able to do! I also love the sweaty smiles on my fellow gym mates and I can tell they are proud they survived the workout as well.
What are you working toward now?
I am not working towards miners mayhem. LOL I guess just more of the same. Staying strong and flexible...forever.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
My favorite SKC story is probably when I learned what a sweat angel was...after making one...ew.

Janna - "Three months later I had fully lost all the weight I gained during pregnancy"

What brought you to the gym?
My husband Caz decided to pursue his passion and open up Sudbury Kettlebell Club!
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
I have always loved the people and the motivating group atmosphere. This has not changed and our group has only gotten better over the years.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
The fun, the variety and the results. I love that I don't have to think about what I'm going to do for a workout. I just show up and Caz has programmed everything for me. I do not get bored at all, as every workout is different.
What are you working toward now? Getting stronger. Specifically, using the 16kg kettlebell consistently and doing an unassisted pull up.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story? I took a bit of a break from Sudbury Kettlebell Club after the birth of our son Cruz. I came back to full workouts 4 to 5 times a week in March of 2018. Three months later I had fully lost all the weight I gained during pregnancy, and now can fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes! These workouts work!

Eric - "I am much more mobile and have a lot more endurance. I feel fit."

What brought you to the gym?
I wanted to lose weight and get in shape and playing hockey 2 times a week just wasn't cutting it. My wife Suzanne started going and raved about the gym. After a little coaxing on her part I went for my intro to KB with Caz and i was sore... i mean hooked.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
I must say my first impression of the gym was the friendly staff. I really had no idea or expectations when I walked in. All I knew was that I left a sweaty mess. Till this day the staff is super friendly and motivating and I still leave a sweaty mess.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
I need structure to work out. I have to compare this to my hockey. I know at such time on such day there is a hockey game and I make time for that game. The same goes for my kettle bell workout. I know that there are workouts at set time on set day, because of this I make time. I love the fact that all I have to do is show up and Caz has set out my work out for me. I show up, I follow the workout (with encouragement and guidance) and I sweat! I need this and I love this!
What are you working toward now?
Since joining my goal has been to lose weight and feel better. Since my first class I've lost 30 lbs and went from a size 42 to a size 38. I couldn't do a sit up and had a hard time doing 10 push up. I am much more mobile and have a lot more endurance. I feel fit. I want to continue on this path. I want to lose more weight and look forward to doing unassisted pull ups.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
I don't have a particular best story. I enjoy multiple little things about the Kettle Bell Club. I enjoy the laugh I have with the people that go there. I enjoy Caz attempt at humour during our work out like - plank faster. I enjoy the first time I did unassisted sit ups, running around the building (even if I hate running) or the first time I did a 32 kg Turkish get up. I keep going because I know I will have more of these little victories and that I am surrounded by people who will celebrate them with me. We have fun and laugh all the while getting fit. Thank you Caz and thank you Sudbury Kettlebell Club. See you Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays!

Suzanne - I find it challenging, motivating and energizing.
What brought you to the gym
I had been running 5 km between 3-4 times a week for over 15 years. In the last year I was dreading waking up to go for a run. I had lost pleasure in doing it. My colleague told me about the Kettlebell Club. At first I was reluctant because I have never been a gym goer. But I had nothing to lose. What was your first impression? Has that changed? I loved it. I signed up for a year membership after my first class. I recently completed 300 classes and I still love it. I find it challenging, motivating and energizing. What is your favourite part of our workouts together? I like that my husband Eric is also a member. It gives us one more thing to share...fitness. What are you working toward now? After spending the weekend with my parents -- my maman, 67, skate skis 10km a day, my papa, 70, plays hockey 4 times a week -- I thrive to be healthy like them when I grow up. What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story? I think it's when I realized that going to the gym was not just a fitness thing, but also a social thing. I look forward to seeing my barely awake kettlebell camarades at 5:55 am. |
Linda - "My fellow work out buddies are supportive and fun"

What brought you to the gym?
In March 2016, I saw a post on Facebook for a 3 week quick start program. I had been looking for a new place to work out and the club sounded interesting and the class schedule fit mine.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
My first impression was that the workouts were challenging and the coaches were excellent. This has definitely not changed.
What is your favourite part of our workouts together?
My favourite part is the people. The coaches are fantastic and my fellow work out buddies are supportive and fun. I also like the variety in the workouts – you never know what you are in for each time.
What are you working toward now?
I am always working toward being stronger and fitter.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
Many of us are anchored in certain smells, and it immediately brings us back to a time in our past, or makes us think of a person or an event. This can be either a positive or negative thing. I always have a feeling of great accomplishment (and relief!) when I complete a Kettle Bell workout. I also always wash my hands before I leave the gym. One of the brands of hand soap at the club is called Live Clean (Sweet Pea) and has a really nice scent. I saw the soap on sale many months ago and stocked up. Every time I wash my hands at home, I smile as the scent reminds me of a good feeling – that feeling of accomplishment that I have after Kettle Bell.

Natalie - "Everyone is there for the right reason"
What brought you to the gym?
A friend of mine did a four-week boot camp and knew that I would love the intensity level of the workout What was your first impression? Has that changed? Everyone is there for the right reasons. Team environment. My impression has not changed. Very supportive and friendly vibe. What are your favourite parts of our workouts together? Having everyone around me focusing so intensely on their fitness. Love that every workout is different. I never know what to expect. What are you working towards now? I am working towards doing a pull up without jumping. What's your best kettlebell story? Not sure what my best Kettlebell story is but I love my fit family, keep up the good work everyone. Thank you for inspiring me always to give it my very best! |
Lisa - "Workouts are challenging. I've learned a lot"

What brought you to the gym? I was a runner and had a nagging injury so decided to try kettlebells.
What was your first impression? Has that changed? My first impression was that the workouts were great. I was hooked. Always something different.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together? I really like that the workouts are always challenging. I've learned a lot. As well, the members are so motivating and encouraging .
What are you working toward now? Getting stronger and gaining mobility. As well, doing strict pull up and snatching the 16kg easily (ha).
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story? Recently Selina & I won the row off. She kicked a$&!!!.

Michelle - "There is no judgement. Just a great bunch of people"
What brought you to the gym?
I came to Sudbury Kettlebell Club because I love kettlebells. lol! Kettlebells are an amazing tool for a full body workout. I've used them at another gym in the past and now I can't see myself NOT using them. What was your first impression? Has that changed? My first impression of the gym was how welcoming everyone is. Everyone is there to work at their ability. There is no judgement. Just a great bunch of people. The longer I am a member, the more I see it. What is your favorite part of our workouts together? My favourite part is not knowing what I'm getting myself into. I go in and let the coaches do their thing. They tell me what to do and I do it. Sure I may complain at first, but I never regret it by the end. What are you working toward now? I am currently working on improving my marathon time. Some day (hopefully in the near future) I would like to run the Boston Marathon. Kettlebells are awesome for cross-training. What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story? I often go to the gym on my lunch break as a way to break up the day. When I first joined and I was learning how to do wall balls, I ended up getting the ball right on the chin. The leather from the ball left a burn on my chin. That was interesting to explain to my co-workers what I had been doing at lunch.... |
Jarrod & Stacey: It was amazing to feel such support from another member

What brought you to the gym?
Stacey: I started a new job and was placed in a school closer to home so I wanted to find a gym that was closer to home as well. Catia was working at my school at the time and told me all about the crazy workouts, supportive coaches and awesome members at the Sudbury Kettlebell Club so we decided to check it out.
Jarrod: Stacey told me we were changing gyms.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
Stacey: Intense workouts in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. It’s only gotten better!
Jarrod: That I was going to die. Now I am slightly less convinced that I am going to die.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
Stacey: Quick and dirty. I don’t have to think about it and every workout kicks my butt and ends with a satisfying high five.
Jarrod: The variation, there is always something different and no two workouts are the same.
What are you working toward now?
Stacey: My 100 workouts certificate! Almost there!
Jarrod: Still trying not to die.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
Stacey: Once we were running laps and I was getting really tired so I branched off to take the dumpster/planter option. Linda saw me and encouraged me to come back and do the full lap. She ran the whole way with me, even though I’m sure I slowed her down. It was amazing to feel such support from another member- everyone has each other’s backs!
Jarrod: The first time I completed a wall walk. I had no idea how to get down but once I not so gracefully figured it out, everyone cheered for me.

Cosimo & Jill - 100 Classes together

What brought you to the gym?
Jill: I had been working out with kettlebells for years before coming to the Sudbury Kettlebell Club, but after the birth of my first child I was finding it harder to make it to classes. I needed to go somewhere that was convient so I had no excuse not to go. The location was perfect for me and I had heard many good things so I made the switch.
Cosimo: Truth be told it was my wife. She had recently joined and thought it would be something that I could do as well. She told she wanted me to try it for at least three months, that was a little less than two years ago and I've been doing it ever since. Pretty much the longest physical activity I've stuck with outside of recreational sports.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
Jill: My first impression was that it was going to be challenging, that has not changed
.
Cosimo: This is going to be tough! No it hasn't changed, it's still tough but It makes it that much more rewarding to have stuck with it.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
Jill: My favourite part of the workouts is that they are always different. I'm always putting my body to the test in new ways.
Cosimo: I think my favorite part is I don't have to think about creating the workout. It's like having your own personal coach, you show up, the workout is set and you workout. When I'd workout at a gym on my own I'd always struggle with what exercises I should be doing, this routine really eliminates any guess work.
What are you working toward now?
Jill: My main goal is just to keep up a consistent workout routine. I would love to lose a few pounds as a bonus, but I know the most important thing is feeling strong and healthy.
Cosimo: I'm just working at keeping active, increasing my strength and stamina.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
Jill: My best story is the one that happens every time I come in. The people are always extremely welcoming and you can be sure there are a lot of people around to motivate you to do your best, or better than you thought you could.
Cosimo: I have two that really stick out. The first, having participated in the Miners Mayhem this past June with members of club. We ran it as a group and finished together...great time with great people! The second was when my wife and I got presented with our 100 classes certificates right before we worked out together.

Kara - "Everyone is cheering everyone on no matter what their fitness level"

What brought you to the gym? I wanted something different for my workouts and something that would challenge me.
What was your first impression? Has it changed? First impression was motivating as everyone was very friendly and continues to be this way even with new members that join. Everyone is cheering everyone on no matter what their fitness level is. I was always part of a competitive team so I honestly look forward to working out with everyone as I feel it is a team environment.
What is your favourite part of our workouts together? Every class is different. It's always a surprise and it continues to challenge me. To top it off it's 45 minutes; quick and dirty 😉 and you don't have to think as our awesome coaches let you know what to do.
What are you working towards now? I am working towards full body strength and overall fitness towards my races.
Whats your best Sudbury Kettlebell Story? My delicate hands...the palms of my hands ripped quite a bit but now they are tougher. Also, my box jump shin gashes; went to do a box jump and i missed the box and gashed my shin...legs were that tired!

Katie - "I loved how after my first workout everyone high fived"

What brought you to the gym?
I needed a change from my regular routine. I was working out on my own and having a hard time motivating myself. I’m originally from Sault Ste. Marie and am relatively new to Sudbury, I tried one Crossfit workout in The Soo at Catalyst when I was home one weekend and asked the owner where I could find a similar thing in Sudbury, he recommended Caz’s gym.
What was your first impression? Has it changed?
I loved the idea of small group workouts and it seemed like it would be a great workout environment overall. Since starting at the gym, my impression hasn’t changed. I love the atmosphere and having a group of people to workout with and motivate me to work my hardest.
What is your favourite part of our workouts together?
Definitely the team environment. I loved how after my first workout everyone high fived, it was really motivating to me.
What are you working towards now?
I’m working toward building my overall strength. I’ve always felt like I’ve had a weak upper body so I’m working toward moving up from that 8kg kettlebell.
Whats your best Sudbury Kettlebell Story?
I would have to say my best Kettlebell Story so far would be when I did my first snatch; it was just something I never thought I’d be able to do.

Lisa - "I love to tell people that it feels like a family"

What brought you to the gym?
My sister, Marsha. She went on about how much she loved this gym and that she new I would love it too. I needed to find a gym that fit into my schedule and was conveniently located. Sudbury Kettlebell was the perfect fit for me.
What was your first impression?
My first impression was nothing but impressed with every aspect. The people, the energy, the coaching, and best of all, the versatile workouts. Has it changed? I still have the same drive and commitment that I had on the first day. Since every workout is different and always targeting new muscle groups, I always feel like I achieve a total body workout.
What is your favourite part of our workouts together? I look forward to the challenge. There is always a way that I can achieve new goals by either trying to increase my kettlebell weight or pushing myself to do more within the given time.
What are you working towards now? I'm working towards becoming stronger so I can do just one pull up or chin up without a band!!
Whats your best Sudbury Kettlebell Story? I love to tell people that it feels like a family when I go to my 6:45 am class. Linda, is like our gym mom who always helps everyone get their weights when we're running late or helps to motivate me when I feel like I may not be able to lift a certain weight. Watching Michelle pick her weights helps me to push myself. When I see her grab a heavier weight, I try to do the same one (sometimes). I have finally found a gym that I see myself being able to commit to for years to come. Thanks Caz and Shannon for being great coaches!!

Lisa - "A feeling of bumping into family or good friends"

I came to the gym in Feb 2017 during a promo. It was suggested to me by a good friend. I was looking for something new to help with my running and strength. I was getting bored working out at home and lacking time for the typical gym membership.
First impression - this is awesome! It fits my family schedule. The classes are intense yet under an hour in duration. Has my impression changed? Yeah, I love it even more! I am stronger and the workout is never the same which keeps it interesting week after week.
My favorite part of our workouts together is the positive and encouraging atmosphere. I like how the focus is on personal improvement and technique rather than a competition of who can lift more. The coaches are awesome and the members all support each other.
I am currently working towards completing a few obstacle courses, increasing strength and endurance for a longer run in late summer.
I'm going to say that my favorite kettlebell story just happened last week. I had driven to the Sudbury Rocks Run alone because my running buddy was sick. I was thinking "well this kinda sucks" and then I bumped into 4 other kettlebell members. It was a feeling of bumping into family or good friends and the support and encouragement I mentioned above came into play. We all ran, we touched base at the end and it just reinforced everything I like about these classes and the people. It helped that I had run a PB and attribute a lot of that success to the Kettlebell workouts.

Sari - Loves Turkish Get Ups

What brought you to the gym?
I really needed to get into shape, and don't like a traditional gym so I thought this would be the best option.
What was your first impression? Has it changed?
First impression was that this was going to be very tough, and it is but I like it. It hasn't changed much, I've always felt comfortable there since day one.
What is your favourite part of our workouts together?
The team workout circuits which are killer but I enjoy the different exercises within the timed workout.
What are you working towards now?
More fat loss, and just getting strong enough to do a pull-up!
Whats your best Sudbury Kettlebell Story?
Laughing at myself for the endless attempts of a Turkish get up. I think I have finally got it!

Keri - "It's is nice to feel like an athlete again"

What brought you to the gym?
My friend Melissa had started a few months before and said great things. After paying for my big gym membership for months without going, I thought it would be good to try the 6 week trial. After that, I was hooked.
What was your first impression? How has it changed?
I first thought the workouts were challenging and I would never not be sore again - and that hasn't really changed. Haha. But in a good way - it shows you can continue to push yourself and challenge yourself even after 8 months.
What is your favourite part of our workouts together?
I love everything (except pull-ups!), and it's is nice to feel like an athlete again. I like lifting heavy weight and fun tabata type workouts best. I still don't like burpees, but I can now survive them, and that's major progress!
What are you working toward?
I still have a long way to go - but pull-ups are a long-term goal.
What is your best Sudbury Kettlebell story?
No one specific story, but I love the moment when we've all survived a killer workout. It's a great feeling to accomplish the workouts!

Jason: "I really like the fact that I just need to show up and can have a workout already planned for me"

What brought you to the gym?
A good friend of mine was attending kettle bell workouts with Caz and saw some great results. I was intrigued by his progress and thought it might be worth checking out. Also I was looking for an early morning workout to for into an already busy day so the class times were pretty appealing.
What was your first impression? Has it changed?
I was a bit nervous at first since I had never worked out with kettle bells before. At first it was difficult and I felt like I had trouble keeping up with the rest of the class. But after a few months I started to progress and move on to heavier weight. Luckily everyone in the class was friendly and really encouraging so it was a good environment to try something new.
What is your favourite part of our workouts together?
I'm a huge fan of the kettle bell classes. By working out with other people, you have some company during the burpees, chin ups, and other exercises that are tough to do. The other people also add extra motivation to keep going and push through the gruelling exercises. Also, I really like the fact that I just need to show up and can have a workout already planned for me. I don't need to think about what I'm going to do at the gym. Luckily someone just barks orders at me and keeps telling me to lift more and work harder. I just need to show up. Also starting my day with a workout gives me energy all day.
What are you working towards now?
I'm working on my diet and trying to take it easy on the weekends which can be a real challenge. It's a work in progress.
Whats your best Sudbury Kettlebell Story?
Since joining the kettle bell program, I was asked to mentor a fellow student in gym. Since that time, Dan Falcioni has seen dramatic improvements with fitness and professional development. He still has a long way to go, but Dan has made great progress. He hopes to one day make it to 100 classes and possibly swing a Purple bell during a future class.

Erika- "I was impressed that a business owner was so concerned with someone's potential success before even meeting them."

I first became interested in Sudbury Kettlebell Club when I knew I needed a push to try a new workout to get me in better shape. My workouts had stagnated since leaving GoodLife and one day I saw this ad come up on my Facebook newsfeed. Right away I knew I had to try it!
My first impression was amazed that Caz wanted to do one on one interviews with new members to make sure we were a "right fit" for each other. I was impressed that a business owner was so concerned with someone's potential success before even meeting them. My first class, I was hooked. I loved how people greeted each other, knew each other's names, and made new people feel welcome.
My favourite part of the workouts is the constant variety. I never know what to expect and my body gets fitter and stronger because of it.
Right now I'm working to improve my pull ups and chin ups... definitely my biggest challenge right now.
My best Sudbury Kettlebell story is when we were doing bent over rows with the Kettlebells and Coach Shannon said "those 16kgs are too light for you, aren't they?" So she grabbed me the 20kg. 😊
This is consistently the best workout I have ever done. I love the coaches, the workouts, the energy and friendliness of the other members, and of course, the results.

Melissa - "Focus it takes to get through the workouts is a great stress relief."

What brought you to the gym?
I saw a four week challenge on facebook and was at a point where I needed a change. Since having kids I had not been able to get back into a regular work out routine and was hoping this would be it.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
My first impression was I'm out of shape and this is really hard, but at the same time really great and motivating! It's been over 8 months now (85 classes to be exact), I continue to be motivated and for the first time since having kids it has been easy to stick to a workout routine, I just want to go!
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
The workout is always different and each one is a challenge. Something I wasn't expecting, is the focus it takes to get through the workouts has turned out to be a great stress relief.
What are you working toward now?
Since I started my goals have changed, I used to focus just on getting back to pre baby weight ect.. It's great to see results in those areas, but I am more focused on putting away the 8kg for good and maybe do a pull up with no bands someday...
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
I can't think of just one, it is just a great environment, there is always a laugh each session mixed with dedicated people working hard and awesome coaches. That great environment keeps me going and motivated.

Dan - "It is contagious atmosphere to keep improving and working."

What brought you to the gym?
I was quite athletic my whole life and realized one day that I don’t do anything anymore. I was also getting some serious love-handles and noticed my energy levels were low. I figured something had to change and I heard about the gym through my good friend, let’s just call him “Caz T.”…. no wait, “C. Taback”.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
I was very impressed to say the least. I knew a couple people at the gym and saw that they had fantastic results so I was eager to get involved. This impression has not changed with more and more people joining, and seeing them feeling better about themselves it is great.
What is your favourite part of our workouts together?
The group mentality definitely. This is very key for myself as motivation to keep working. Once we get into a routine / build relationships with coaches and other members, it is contagious atmosphere to keep improving and working.
What are you working toward now?
Just getting stronger every day and staying committed to the cause of a healthier me. I have goals of increasing the weight of the bells that I use, which makes the workouts more challenging. It is amazing that some bells which used to give me a hard time I now find easy.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
I once worked out right beside Jason Turnbull of Up North CBC fame. Some of his sweat even dripped on me.
My other good story was one of my first workouts running outside and getting lapped by nearly everyone else in the class as we ran. This was a good wake-up call for me to get my act together and so far, so good.

Lindsay - "One week in and I was hooked"

What brought you to the gym?
I was introduced to Sudbury Kettlebell Club by my co-worker Carrie. At the time, I was going to the local community center on my lunch hour to work out. It was close to my work which made it a convenient place to go and exercise; however, I really wasn’t getting anywhere. I was lost, not sure what to do with myself. I needed some guidance and maybe even a little push. I mentioned this boredom to my co-worker , Carrie. She had been going to the Sudbury Kettlebell Club for a few months and really enjoyed it. She suggested I give it a try. I didn’t even know what a kettlebell was, so I wasn’t too sure. Then I saw a 6 week challenge posted on Facebook, the price was great, so I decided why not.
What was your first impression?
I wasn’t able to make it to the group introductory class, so Caz met me separately for a one on one , which I thought that was very accommodating of him. I really appreciated the fact that he was able to prepare me for the 1st class by going through various exercises and providing me with a basic understanding of some of the kettlebell movements. My 1st class was pretty cool. Everyone was really nice. I worked at my own pace and that was ok. Caz was great at keeping an eye on everyone and making sure we all had proper technique. That gave me great comfort, as I definitely did not want to deal with any injuries. I found the workout to be challenging, well planned and I really enjoyed it . One week in and I was hooked.
Has that changed?
Not at all, I have been attending regularly for a year now. I am never bored, the classes are still challenging but enjoyable. And the coaches are great! They are motivating and very attentive. They are always ready to offer an alternative exercise if someone is unable to do a particular exercise. Even though you are in a group fitness class you almost feel like you have a personal trainer.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
I love that I just need to show up and that’s it . No more walking around the gym wondering what to do next. The workout plans are well thought out, balanced and short. I feel so good about what is accomplished in that 45 minutes.
What are you working toward now?
I will continue to work on building my strength. Maybe say good bye to that 8kg bell forever (except warmups ;). I definitely have noticed improvements since joining one year ago but there is still so much more I want to accomplish.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
I really enjoyed the Kettlebells for Cancer Event. I actually swung the red kettlebell (sorry Caz , don’t know the kg of red)
Eric: "I love the camaraderie that I've experienced"

What brought you to the gym?Since the birth of my daughter I had been struggling to find a convenient time to workout. Being that the Kettlebell Club is 2 minutes from my work it was the perfect fit.
What was your first impression? Has that changed.
I'd be lying if I said I immediately knew that I'd love the place. I think it's just human nature to be a little hesitant even maybe intimidated by the unknown. But I realized after just a couple workouts that this was something I could do as long as I was willing to step out of my comfort zone.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
I love the camaraderie that I've experienced which I think is directly related to the smaller classes. Everyone is very encouraging with each other, coaches and athletes alike.
What are you working toward now?
Weight loss is what brought me in but ultimately this is about re-establishing a healthy lifestyle that I can maintain for years to come.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
With the exception of being able to train while listening to Slayer (thanks Caz 😉 ) every day I train is a great day. I drag myself in and at the end of the workout I leave knowing I'm a little bit stronger, a little bit fitter, a little bit healthier.

Shannon: "I feel stronger, I feel confident, I'm often proud of myself"

What brought you to the gym?
I joined what was once called Innate Fitness two and a half years ago. I saw a post shared on Facebook by one of my friends and thought this was the change I needed in my life.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
My first impression was that the kettlebells seemed to be very intimidating yet super awesome at the same time. I was intrigued because i needed to be challenged and this was exactly what it seemed to be. That has not changed either. I love doing kettlebell workouts and every single workout is still challenging to me. If I have mastered a movement, then I just increase my weight or my reps and it becomes challenging again. It's great how every workout is different as well, this helps to increase my strength, my stamina and also my confidence, as I always seem to be learning new things.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
My favourite part is how I feel after I've completed a workout. I feel stronger, I feel confident, I'm often proud of myself for completing or for doing what I didn't think I could, and I'm super determined and motivated to come back and workout again.
What are you working toward now?
I'm working towards continuing to get stronger, in my everyday life as well as in the gym. I have grown so much since becoming a member, I want to grow more! I have many goals I will accomplish in the near future.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
The memory or moment that stands out the most for me since being a member at the gym, is when I was able to pull my own body weight over the bar doing a chin up, then I did 3!! A few weeks later I managed to do an unassisted pull up! I would have never even imagined I could do either of those things! I was so excited!! I jumped up and down in excitement and shared my progress with everyone. So exciting! Without Caz' training and assistance, this would have never happened!! I love this place!

Tasha: "Everyone is motivated, which is contagious"
What brought you to the Gym:
I started with Kettlebell because I thought it was a unique way to work out, and had heard lots of really positive things about i the sudbury kettlebell club. But Like most people, I have personal goals of becoming strong and healthy!
First impression:
First time walking in I was a little nervous about what this would look like.. but everyone was so welcoming, encouraging and patient in the learning process! The instructors are helpful and really encourage you to go at your own pace.
Fav Part:
The group atmosphere is great, everyone is motivated which is contagious. The encouragement from other members and overall the positive vibe of the whole place. I also like that the Team supports community causes and encourages its members to participate.
Working towards:
Well after last session the turkish get up:) I look forward to seeing my body get stronger and continue pushing myself farther than I thought I could go.
Best story...Landing on my head after doing a head stand....lol I still maintain this should only be reserved for small children or gymnast. :)

Amit: "That confidence has been helping in personal life and business life."

What brought you to the gym?-I joined the gym to lose some weight and want to be physically and mentally proactive in my day to day life.
What was your first impression?-My first impression of the gym was that would I be able to do this extensive work out? Secondly, Would I be able to continue for at least 6 weeks?
Has that changed? Absolutely, under Caz's guidance; I was able to do all of these movements which I never did in the past. More over to Caz's positive comments made me more confident in my work out. Impotently, that confidence has been helping in personal life and business life. I am more confident and bold in my decision making skill now than before. Now, I enjoyed going to gym and it's has become my routine to go gym at least three times a week.
What is your favourite part of our workouts together? It is very difficult to say which part of work out is my favourite because from warm up to end of the work out there is no dull moment. The beauty of Caz's work out is every day different and challenging; which is different from traditional gym. After finishing the work out I feel more energetic than ever before. I would say work out is client centric.
What are you working toward now? I am working towards to increase my strength. I would like to start running for 3 to 4 km every day.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story? It was a day early in spring; there wasn’t snow outside and Caz’s added lap around building for warm up. I haven’t run that long in last 5 years; however, I was able to complete lap without making any stop. It was possible because of the past few months work out at Sudbury kettlellbell Club under Caz’s guidance.

John: "looking for something different than the regular weight rooms."

What brought you to the gym?
I had set some goals to lose weight, get stronger, just be generally healthier and was looking for something different than the regular weight rooms. I didn't really want to be in at atmosphere where everything seems like a competition and you don't really know what to do anyway.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
I found the small venue and class sizes great. The atmosphere was very friendly and non-competitive. Everybody works out to their best ability. The class sizes are now slightly larger and the venue has changed but the atmosphere has remained the same.
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
The workouts are challenging but also fun. The feeling when completing the workout is amazing.
What are you working toward now?
I realized through this journey for a bit over two years now that I really enjoy running and had set goals to reduce times and perhaps run a half marathon sometime. After running over 200 km this year and three failed attempts I was recently able to run 21km in 2 hours and 5 minutes. Now I will continue to work on reducing the time.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
I think it was very impressive to see the gym progress from the little garage on Lloyd street with limited members to the current location with many new members. I also like to see other members progress. On a funnier note, one morning a few of us spent 10-15 minutes chasing a mouse around the gym with blue boxes.

What brought you to the gym?
My husband bought me a 6-week trial for Christmas, knowing I would never spend money on a gym membership. After the 6 weeks, there was no hesitation in joining for the entire year!
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
I’m not going to lie; I’ve enjoyed it since day one! You definitely gave off a great first impression!!
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
I enjoy being pushed!! I often look at what weight Shannon is using to convince myself I can do the same!!
What are you working toward now?
I would love to be more consistent with the 16 kg bell J
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
My best Kettlebells story is becoming Facebook famous when you posted my snatching! I received so many compliments from both friends that knew I had joined and those that didn’t.
The best part is, I only snatched that weight because you told me too that day!!

Rich - "I was NEVER a gym guy"

I was never a "gym" guy. I was always doing activities that kept me in shape. At least that is what I thought. After injuring my knees a couple of years ago I had to stop doing a lot of the things that kept me busy. Lindsay had started working out at your gym in late 2015 and I decided that 2016 would be my year to get healthy. I had been in physio for a number of months at this point and felt I was ready to start some sort of exercise.
Lindsay had explained how the workouts were structured and it interested me. I was surprised at how little I new about working out and the benefits I would get from it. As with all activities I do I went into this full on. I quickly realized how out out of shape I was. I found my stamina was not good, my technique was incorrect and I just couldn't lift much. But, I had committed to myself to get healthy this year and knew that results would come with perseverance. The workouts you put together are challenging, always different and fun. You push everybody to do their best and I appreciate that motivation. I like that the workouts include strength and conditioning and can be done in a short period of time.
My goals when I went into this was to just feel better and hopefully repair my injured knees. Both goals are well on there way to being met. (I do like to set some strength tests for fun. In October I want to be able to push press 2 orange (28kg). Doing 2 greens (24kg) at the start of July was easier than I thought it would be!)
Not to sure about a kettlebell club story but our canoe win at the picnic was awesome.

Catia - "I feel like I have found the "more" I was looking for"

What brought you to the gym?
I will be forever grateful to Erin Duguay, Shannon Barriault's Mom. We were talking at work and I was voicing my frustrations as to my exercise regime. I was telling her how I was in need of something "more". She was telling me about Shannon and how she was enjoying "kettlebells". I had no clue what they were...she told me to get in touch with her so that she could explain it to me so I did. Shannon hooked me up with Caz and the rest is history!
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
My first impression was "WOW!" ...this is hard but I knew deep down that it was the challenge I was looking for! I was kind of hesitant to my abilities at first but Caz was awesome...and was there to modify some aspects of the workouts if I needed and he and the members were always encouraging and never made me feel like this was going to be something that I couldn't do! Almost 2 years into it and I feel like I have found the "more" that I was looking for! Both Caz and Shannon are awesome coaches and continue to make every class challenging and fun!
What is your favourite part of our workouts together?
My favourite part of the workouts is the challenge that Caz gives us EVERY single class! No workout is the same! Both Caz and Shannon are there to motivate us and it always makes me laugh when I say (and hear from the other members;)) after every class, "OMG that was a tough one!", but in all honesty, all the workouts are tough! That's what I love about this club! The workouts are 45 minutes and cardio and strength are both targeted in every class.
What are you working toward now?
At this point, I feel like I've become SO much stronger from when I started and it makes me feel so good physically and mentally! I'm swinging and cleaning yellow bells! (16kg) 💪 now my goal is to continue with kettlebells and incorporate better eating habits to reach my weight loss goals. Together I know I can reach my long term health goals!
What's your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
My best personal Sudbury Kettlebell Club story is the day I cleaned and pressed double yellow (16kg) kettlebells for the first time! I was so excited and shocked that I was able to do it! Never in a million years did I ever think I would be able to! I was so pumped and felt so Strong!
Another SKC best story is the day the club hosted a Kettlebells for Cancer. It was so much fun and we did it for a great cause! All the money raised was given to the Northern Cancer Foundations Paediatric Oncology unit! I'm looking forward to participating in the 2nd Kettlebells for Cancer Event on September 10th!

Kelly - "I've tried other gyms and always get bored then quit going"

I was talking with a friend of mine at a curling event in the winter and she mentioned to me how much she loved going to kettle bells. I told her I've tried other gyms and always get bored then quit going. She suggested i just give it's try. Funny how the world works, because that same weekend I saw a post on Facebook about a 6 week trial going on. And I messaged Caz. He responded very quickly, and even met me at the gym to give me a tour.
The gym itself is well maintained and clean, and Caz is very professional. I signed up and started the next week, and haven't looked back! Caz always has safety at top of mind, and pushes everyone to go the extra mile.I look forward to going, everyone has such a positive outlook, and we all really push each other. I consider the early morning crew my friends; we're missed when we're not there.
I feel great since I've started. I honestly don't know how much weight I've lost...to me it doesn't matter. What does matter, is I feel great, I have gone down a few sizes in my clothes, and people notice that I'm looking much healthier.
I feel more confident in perusing other physical activities, and the more I try, the more I would like to try.
I do have goals, I'm committed to the Sudbury Kettle Bell club, and next year I plan on participating in the miners mayhem, and other activities they take part in and I do have a little black dress I would like to wear:)
If you're looking for something different to take part in with a great group of people you should definitely give Kettle Bells a try!

Dana - "I feel like a part of a special club"

What brought you to the gym?
I was looking for something that offered something like fitness classes or personal training but was not in the typical gym format because I had tried that before and it didn't stick. I have enjoyed attending boot camps in the morning and Sudbury Kettlebell Club offered a schedule that could work for me all year round.
What was your first impression? Has that changed?
I loved the gym's look and feel and the small classes made it feel like personal training. Even as the gym has grown, the atmosphere is the same and the people that attend are like friends, so even when the gym is at max capacity it is still super fun!
What is your favorite part of our workouts together?
I love that they are always different. Caz really knows how to mix it up and keep it fun and interesting.
What are you working toward now?
I am working on maintaining a health lifestyle. Working out has not been my thing, but I have really enjoyed the last year or so, and it means a lot that I still love to go.
What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story?
Not sure I have one best story..... I feel like a part of a special club, so every time I enter the door no matter what mood I may be in, I always have a good time and feel great when I leave.

What brought you to the gym?
A friend, Selina had mentioned that she was signed up to start at the beginning of the year and it sounded like fun, the class hours would work with my changing schedule and the location was nice and close. What was your first impression? Has that changed? From the very beginning I loved the concept of the kettlebell class, circuit training with kettlebells very challenging and definitely never boring with a very enthusiastic trainer, I started to feel the results immediately and it relieved my stress, I also love the atmosphere with the other members no one judging just everyone giving 100 percent. My impression is that the Sudbury Kettlebell Club just keeps improving and evolving with the members I usually never stick with a membership and this is the first time that I have no problem committing yearly. What is your favorite part of our workouts together? The end and the music just joking.... It is such a great feeling when you surprise yourself by bettering your reps/weights/pace from the previous class and working in groups is a lot of fun motivating each other and all sweaty to the end, there’s never a dull moment What are you working toward now? I would like to progress to a heavier weight and also not use any bands doing pull ups lol... I feel if I also ate cleaner I would have more energy those would be some goals of mine What’s your best Sudbury Kettlebell Club story? My best Sudbury Kettlebell Club Story would be when my daughter came to watch me and told me how proud she was of her mom. |
